Rick Davies, Supertramp’s Iconic Frontman, Passes Away After a Long Battle with Cancer

Rick Davies, the co-founder, voice, and pianist behind the legendary rock band Supertramp, has passed away peacefully at the age of 81. Known for shaping the sound of an era, his music, piano, and songwriting created timeless hits that continue to resonate across generations.

Davies passed at his home in Long Island on September 5, after a long battle with cancer. In 2015, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer affecting the bone marrow and white blood cells. Despite his health challenges, his passion for music never waned.

Born in Swindon, England, Davies discovered early that music was his true calling. As his mother fondly recalled, “Music was the only thing he was any good at at school.” That dedication led him to team up with friend Roger Hodgson in 1969, forming what would become Supertramp, one of the most influential rock bands of their era.

Though Davies and Hodgson came from very different backgrounds, they clicked instantly, blending their voices and musical talents to craft a sound that would captivate audiences worldwide. By the early 1970s, the band was gaining traction, but it was their 1979 album, Breakfast in America, that catapulted them to international fame. The record topped the Billboard charts and produced enduring hits like “The Logical Song,” “Goodbye Stranger,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and the title track, earning Grammy nominations and cementing the band’s place in rock history.
