In 1961, Ricky began dating Kristin Harmon, who shared a similar Hollywood background. They married in April 1963 and had four children: Sam Hilliard Nelson, twins Matthew Gray Nelson and Gunnar Eric Nelson, and Tracy Kristine Nelson. Ricky’s sons would later carry on their father’s musical legacy, forming the group Nelson.
The Fateful Flight
Despite frequent tours, Ricky had a well-known fear of flying. He reportedly sought psychotherapy to manage his anxiety and continue performing for his fans. In late 1985, Ricky was scheduled to fly to Dallas for a New Year’s show, with his sons Matthew and Gunnar expected to join him.
However, days before departure, Ricky experienced an unease that prompted him to call his sons and cancel their travel plans. This last-minute decision ultimately saved their lives. Ricky boarded the DC-3 aircraft in Alabama alone. As the plane neared its destination, smoke filled the cabin. Tragically, Ricky and the other passengers perished, but the plane was safely landed by the pilot.

The cause of the fire remains unclear, with speculation over the years suggesting mechanical issues. Ricky’s daughter Tracy Nelson has shared her belief that a faulty gasoline heater, known to have issues on the aircraft, may have started the fire. Friends and family have denied rumors linking Ricky to substance use, emphasizing that he and his companion were asleep when the fire began.
Legacy
Ricky Nelson’s foresight prevented a greater family tragedy. His sons, Matthew and Gunnar, went on to have successful music careers in honor of their father. Matthew described their work as “an ongoing labor of love, an open letter to our dad, who was our best friend.”
