The White House is weighing changes to the seating arrangement in its iconic press briefing room—a move that could shift who gets front-row access during official briefings.

According to senior officials, the Biden administration is considering a plan to reflect how Americans now consume news in a more digital and decentralized environment. Under the proposal, long-established media outlets such as CNN, NBC, and The New York Times may share or rotate their front-row positions with emerging voices in digital media, including podcast hosts, YouTube creators, independent writers, and social media-based journalists.

“This is about keeping pace with how people access news today,” a senior official told Axios. “It’s not about rewarding any specific outlet—it’s about inclusivity and modernization.”

The potential changes would give greater access to content creators with large online audiences, some of whom have built strong followings through independent platforms and nontraditional formats. Supporters say the shift reflects broader changes in media consumption and would allow for a more diverse mix of voices to engage directly with the administration.

However, the proposal has sparked debate within the press corps. The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), which oversees the press room seating chart, expressed concern about the potential impact on journalistic standards and traditions. WHCA President Eugene Daniels emphasized that “access should be based on journalistic credibility and integrity, not just reach or popularity.”
