In a heartfelt farewell speech from the Senate floor, Senator Mitt Romney reflected on his six years representing Utah, delivering a message of appreciation, unity, and civic responsibility. Calling his time in office “an honor,” the 77-year-old senator expressed admiration for colleagues on both sides of the aisle and encouraged a renewed spirit of cooperation in American politics.
“I have been surprised by how much I like the other senators, on both sides of the aisle,” Romney said with a smile. Known for his bipartisan approach and principled leadership, Romney played a key role in shaping legislation on COVID relief, infrastructure, and electoral reform during his term.
About two dozen senators gathered for the farewell, including members of the bipartisan “Group of Ten,” a coalition that worked together on major legislation. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell praised Romney’s “uncompromising honesty and devotion to faith,” while Senator Cory Booker described him as “a great American patriot.” Senator Joe Manchin shared that Romney’s friendship had made him “a better person.”
Romney took time to thank the many people who had supported his journey—from his Senate staff to campaign advisers. He asked that their names be added to the Senate record. He also paid a touching tribute to his wife, Ann, calling her the “love of my life” and his “most trusted adviser.” Ann, seated in the gallery with several of their children and grandchildren, smiled proudly throughout his remarks.
