Braden West’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. Born with Pfeiffer syndrome Type 2, a rare craniofacial condition that affects skull development and brain growth, Braden’s life was full of uncertainty from the very beginning. Doctors warned his mother, Cheri, just two weeks before his birth that her son might not survive beyond 18 months.
“I prayed every day for God to take him or let him live,” Cheri recalled, describing the early fears she faced. “It looked like he might be born with serious deformities, even teeth at birth. The situation was terrifying.”
Despite the grim prognosis, Braden’s arrival sparked a profound bond between mother and son.
Early Struggles and Medical Challenges
From the start, Braden faced life-threatening challenges. Many children with Pfeiffer syndrome Type 2 do not survive infancy, but Braden defied expectations. At just three months old, he required a tracheotomy and underwent a procedure with only a 10% chance of survival.
“We signed DNR papers and prepared to say goodbye,” Cheri said. “But instead of tragedy, the doctors came out and said he had made it through.”
Throughout this time, registered nurse Michele Eddings Linn provided dedicated care and became a trusted figure in Braden’s life. “I prayed that night either for him to pass peacefully or to get better,” Michele recalled. “He pulled through, and he was my first patient to leave hospice care alive. That was unforgettable.”
Defying the Odds and Achieving Milestones
With the love and support of his family and nurses like Michele, Braden thrived. Despite over 30 surgeries and years of therapy, he gradually gained independence. He walked with a walker until age five and eventually learned to walk unaided.
Seventeen years after nearly losing his life, Braden celebrated his high school graduation—an achievement that felt impossible during his early months. Cheri described the moment as overwhelming:
“When I watched him walk across that stage, I remembered all the doctors’ warnings, all the obstacles, and how he wasn’t supposed to even hold a pencil, speak, see, or hear. And yet here he is.”
To mark this incredible milestone, Braden’s parents arranged a special celebration, including a helicopter ride to see one of his favorite musicians, country singer Cam Thompson, in concert.
Looking Forward: Dreams and Dedication
Now 22, Braden continues to inspire those around him. He is a member of the Civil Air Patrol in Owensboro, Kentucky, and recently began volunteering as a firefighter with the Moseleyville Fire Department—fulfilling a lifelong dream.
Braden’s achievements serve as a powerful reminder of resilience and determination. “Don’t ever give up,” Cheri said. “No matter how steep the climb, keep going—the view from the top is incredible.”
Through faith, determination, and unwavering support, Braden has not only survived but thrived, excelling academically and pursuing his passions with courage and optimism.
