When Duke alerted on a specific hay bale, Miller investigated and discovered improvised compartments beneath the load. Inside, several people were found, exhausted, dehydrated, and visibly frightened. Emergency services were immediately called, and all victims were safely removed and treated.
The driver, identified as Stephen Kovich, was detained, and an investigation is ongoing. Miller credited his training and Duke’s instincts for the quick intervention. “It could have gone very differently,” he said.
The rescue highlights both the dangers present on rural highways and the critical role of law enforcement and K-9 units in detecting hidden threats. Authorities are now working to identify the victims and ensure their safety.
