Lying in a hospital bed, my body weak from dehydration and exhaustion, those words felt distant—almost dreamlike. But when the doctor added, “Your children are safe,” a sense of relief finally washed over me. I could breathe again.

That moment of crisis marked only one chapter in a longer story—one that quietly began years earlier, with the weekly arrival of a garbage truck and two friendly sanitation workers.

My twins, Jesse and Lila, were just toddlers when they became fascinated by our neighborhood’s garbage collection. Every Monday morning, like clockwork, they’d rush to the window to watch the big truck roll up the street. It wasn’t just the loud machinery or the lifting bins—they loved the routine.
