Trump Promises $2,000 Tariff Dividend for All Americans: Says Opposing Tariffs Is Foolish

After days of speculation, Donald Trump confirmed Sunday morning what many had suspected: he plans to deliver every American a $2,000 “tariff dividend,” claiming it will be funded entirely by the tariffs his administration has imposed worldwide. Announcing the move on Truth Social, Trump framed it as a reward for everyday Americans — and a rebuttal to critics who’ve slammed his tariff strategy as reckless.

Reactions exploded immediately. Supporters cheered the prospect of cash in their pockets, while opponents dismissed it as a flashy, legally murky, election-season stunt. Adding to the intrigue, the Supreme Court is currently reviewing whether Trump even has the authority to impose such sweeping tariffs under emergency powers, leaving the plan hanging in legal uncertainty.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent quickly tried to temper expectations. In an interview with ABC’s This Week, he suggested the “dividend” might come in the form of tax breaks rather than direct $2,000 checks — a far cry from the headline-grabbing announcement.
