Trump Signs Major Travel Ban Targeting 12 Nations, Citing National Security
Former President Donald Trump has enacted a sweeping new travel restriction that blocks entry into the United States from 12 countries, with officials citing concerns about national security and the reliability of foreign vetting procedures. The executive order is scheduled to take effect on June 9, triggering a full travel ban on citizens from:
Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
In addition to the full bans, the order imposes partial restrictions on visa issuance—covering both immigrant and certain non-immigrant categories—for individuals from:
Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
In a video released shortly after signing the proclamation, Trump emphasized the need for enhanced border security and stronger identity verification systems. “We will not accept migration from any country that cannot reliably screen and vet its citizens,” he said.
