Trump threatens US with rarely used 1807 law

Los Angeles is experiencing a period of intense civil unrest following a series of high-profile immigration enforcement actions. What began as peaceful demonstrations in several neighborhoods has grown into a wider public outcry, prompting both local and federal responses.

Concerns were first raised after stepped-up immigration enforcement efforts in the city led to protests from residents and community advocates. Demonstrations calling for reform and accountability soon escalated, resulting in reports of property damage and clashes between some demonstrators and law enforcement.

In response, former President Donald Trump announced the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to assist in maintaining order in the city. Additional troops, including a second wave of National Guard personnel and U.S. Marines, were later dispatched following continued reports of unrest.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump referenced the possibility of invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807, a federal law that grants the president authority to deploy the military under specific circumstances involving civil disorder. “If there’s an insurrection, I would certainly consider invoking it,” he stated. The law has been used sparingly throughout U.S. history, most notably during the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the Civil Rights era.
