Former U.S. President Donald Trump made a brief visit to the United Kingdom this week, where he held meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The visit included discussions on key global issues such as trade, the war in Ukraine, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Trump also spent time at one of his golf courses in Scotland during the trip.
This visit follows a previous meeting between Starmer and Trump at the White House earlier this year, during which the UK Prime Minister delivered a handwritten note from King Charles and an official invitation for a state visit this coming September.
However, Monday’s joint press conference in Edinburgh brought an unexpected moment of tension. When asked about whether he planned to visit London during the upcoming State Visit, Trump voiced criticism of London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, stating, “I will, I’m not a fan of your mayor. I think he’s done a poor job.”
Prime Minister Starmer, sitting beside Trump, responded quickly and briefly, noting, “He’s a friend of mine,” signaling disagreement with the former U.S. president’s assessment.
Despite the momentary exchange, Trump reaffirmed his intention to visit the capital, saying, “I will certainly visit London. I hope so.”
