Dan and I always got those “couple goals” comments. Matching outfits, inside jokes, goofy dancing at weddings—people said we made love look easy. And honestly? We kind of believed it too.
Last month was our seventh anniversary. I posted a candid photo from a friend’s wedding—me laughing, Dan kissing my cheek. It was sweet, real, totally us. I captioned it: “7 years, 1000 memories, and still my favorite person. #AnniversaryLove #StillGotIt.”
The post blew up fast. Hundreds of likes and heart emojis, comments like “Forever inspo.” But then the comments took a strange turn.
Dan’s college ex wrote, “Glad it all worked out for you two.”
A former coworker said, “Wild how time changes people. Hope you’re both happy.”
Then my cousin sent me a direct message with a warning: “Look closely at the background in that photo.”
At first, I didn’t see anything unusual. But then I noticed my sister — with her hand on Dan’s back. The photo was from three months ago, but my sister had said she couldn’t make it because of work.
I didn’t say anything right away, but the comments and emojis started to feel different.
