Our week with Nicholas wasn’t glamorous. Rain ruined our zoo trip, so we built blanket forts and made flashlight “campfires.” At the arcade, broken machines led us to a quiet park. Each day seemed humbler than the Featheringhams’ lavish outings, yet Nicholas laughed, played, and fell asleep in my lap.
On decision day, Nicholas surprised everyone. He pointed to us, saying, “They make me happy. It feels like home.”
Despite our doubts, love won. Nicholas didn’t choose wealth; he chose family — and he chose us.
