“Our friend is part of the family. You just don’t see it yet.”
The words felt far too deliberate for a child so young.
Something wasn’t right.
A few days later, Martha casually brought up the topic with Cheryl during breakfast.
“Has Beverly met someone new lately?” she asked. “She keeps talking about a friend.”
Cheryl barely looked up from her coffee.
“Oh, kids make up imaginary friends all the time,” she replied smoothly. “I wouldn’t worry about it.”
But Martha did worry.
The explanation didn’t sit right with her. Her instincts told her something was being hidden.
That night, after hours of uneasy thinking, she made a decision she never thought she’d make.
She installed a small hidden camera in the living room—an old baby monitor camera they had once used when Beverly was younger.
The following Wednesday, Martha went to work as usual. But she couldn’t focus. By lunchtime, curiosity and anxiety got the better of her.
She opened the camera app on her phone.
At first, everything looked normal.
Beverly was playing with dolls on the living room floor while Cheryl relaxed on the couch with a cup of tea. A bowl of fruit sat beside the little girl.
Then Cheryl checked her watch.
“Bev, sweetheart,” she said brightly, “are you ready? Our friend will be here any minute.”
Martha’s stomach dropped.
“Our friend” was real.
Beverly clapped her hands happily.
“I love her!” she said. “Do you think she’ll play with my hair again?”
Cheryl laughed softly.
“If you ask nicely. And remember what we talked about… what we don’t tell Mommy.”
Beverly nodded.
“Not a word to Mom.”
Martha’s hands began to shake.
Moments later, the doorbell rang.
Cheryl stood up and walked toward the door.
Martha leaned closer to the screen as Cheryl opened it.
The woman who stepped inside made Martha’s heart stop.
It was Alexa—Jason’s ex-wife.
The woman Martha had been told moved away years ago.
Before Martha could even process it, Beverly ran straight into Alexa’s arms.
That was the moment Martha grabbed her keys and rushed home.
When she burst through the front door, the scene matched exactly what she had seen on the camera.
Cheryl, Alexa, and Beverly were sitting together on the couch like a comfortable little gathering.
Alexa looked surprised.
“Oh… hi, Martha,” she said casually. “Didn’t expect you home yet.”
Martha’s voice trembled with anger.
“What is she doing here?”
Beverly looked confused.

“Mommy, why are you ruining the reunion?” she asked innocently.
Reunion?
Cheryl leaned back calmly, as if the situation didn’t bother her at all.
“You were bound to find out eventually,” she said.
What followed was a conversation Martha would never forget.
Cheryl explained—without remorse—that she believed Jason belonged with Alexa, not Martha. In her mind, Alexa was the “right” partner all along.
And Cheryl wanted Beverly to build a relationship with her… just in case Jason and Alexa reunited someday.
The idea that someone had been quietly shaping her daughter’s view of family behind her back felt like betrayal.
Martha immediately picked Beverly up and left the house.
Later that evening, she explained the situation to Jason and showed him the footage from the camera.
He was stunned.
After a long silence, he made his position clear.
His mother would no longer be allowed near Beverly.
Cheryl tried calling repeatedly to explain herself, but Martha refused to engage. Some boundaries, she realized, must be firm.
Protecting her child came first.
What started as a simple babysitting arrangement had revealed a painful truth about trust, family, and loyalty.
And sometimes, the hardest decisions are the ones that protect the people we love most.
What do you think about Martha’s decision?
