Trump Announces New Travel Ban Targeting 12 Nations, Citing National Security Concerns
Former President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping new travel ban affecting citizens from 12 countries, citing what he described as urgent national security threats. The executive order, scheduled to take effect on June 9, fully blocks entry to travelers from Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
In addition to the full bans, the proclamation imposes partial restrictions on certain visa categories—including immigrant and non-immigrant visas—for individuals from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
Speaking in a video released shortly after the announcement, Trump said bluntly, “We don’t want them,” and emphasized that the U.S. must reject open migration from countries lacking reliable identity verification and security screening. He also warned that Egypt could be added to the list pending an investigation into its vetting procedures, after an Egyptian national was accused of a violent attack during a recent rally in Colorado.
