Born in 1955 in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood and raised in Dolton, Illinois, Robert Prevost grew up in a Catholic family of French and Spanish descent. His path to the priesthood began early, with a sense of vocation in grade school. He attended high school seminary, studied at Villanova University, and went on to serve in Peru for many years, eventually becoming bishop of Chiclayo. He later held dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship.
Those who knew him describe him as kind, deeply spiritual, and committed to walking alongside people in their everyday lives. Reverend John Lyndon, a longtime friend, recalls, “He found joy in simple things—music, good food, and being present for others. Seeing him become pope still feels surreal.”
A Voice of Continuity and Openness
Though viewed by some as a bridge between tradition and reform, Pope Leo XIV maintains strong adherence to Catholic doctrine. He has expressed a pastoral tone on issues such as care for creation, cultural inclusion, and the dignity of all people. He has also affirmed the value of local cultural perspectives in the practice of faith.
His election came swiftly—the conclave concluded in less than 24 hours. While other candidates, such as Cardinal Tagle of the Philippines, were seen as frontrunners, Cardinal Prevost’s selection signaled a blend of continuity with Pope Francis and a renewed emphasis on global unity.

In the United States, the news prompted mixed reactions. Many Catholics welcomed the appointment of an American pope as a moment of pride and connection. Others engaged in conversation about his pastoral priorities and the future direction of the Church.
