The Unlikely Family
Alice had always noticed Christopher, a young boy who came by her restaurant to collect leftovers. Something about him intrigued her—he didn’t seem like the typical child in need, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to his story. One evening, she decided to follow him.
“Good news, kid! We’ve got plenty of leftovers tonight,” said Steve, the head chef, as Christopher grinned with excitement.
“Really? Do you think there’s enough for me to share with my friends?” he asked eagerly.
“There’s plenty,” Steve replied, handing him several food packets.
Alice, watching from a distance, felt a strange curiosity. Christopher thanked Steve with a smile and walked away with his bundle, but Alice couldn’t help but think, He doesn’t look like a homeless kid.
For days, Alice kept an eye on him. When Christopher returned, she decided to greet him herself.
“Hi there! Are you here for leftovers again?” she asked with a friendly smile.
“Yes, ma’am!” he said, beaming. “The chef always has something for me.”
“Well, today I’ve prepared something fresh for you,” Alice said. “By the way, what’s your name?”
“Christopher, but everyone calls me Chris,” he said with a grin.
Alice hesitated for a moment. “Chris, why don’t you eat at home? Is everything alright with your family?”
His smile faded slightly. “I live at an orphanage,” he said quickly. “They don’t always feed us well, so I come here. Your team’s been really kind to me. Thanks for the food!” He grabbed the packets and rushed out before Alice could ask more.
Something didn’t sit right with her. So, Alice decided to follow him.
