To her surprise, Christopher didn’t go to an orphanage at all. Instead, he stopped at a small house, placed the food on the porch, and dashed away. A few moments later, an elderly woman opened the door, looked around, and took the food inside.
Alice wanted to ask the woman who she was, but she had to leave to handle a work emergency. The next day, Alice was waiting for Christopher.
“Chris, I need you to be honest with me,” Alice said softly. “I know you’ve been taking food to someone else. Who is she?”
Christopher’s face fell. “It’s my grandma,” he confessed. “I’m sorry I lied, but she’s all I’ve got.”
Alice was stunned. “Why do you live in an orphanage then?”
He explained, “When my parents passed away, my grandma couldn’t get custody of me. She’s not financially stable, but I bring her food every day.”
Alice’s heart ached for the boy and his grandmother. She knew she had to help.
The next day, Alice visited Edith, Christopher’s grandmother. When Edith learned that her grandson had been secretly bringing her food, she broke down. “I miss him so much. I couldn’t provide for him,” she cried.
Alice reassured her. “Don’t worry, I think I can help.”
Determined, Alice went to the orphanage and filed for custody on Edith’s behalf. The process was quick, and soon, Christopher was back home with his grandma.
“I can’t thank you enough,” Edith said, tears in her eyes. “I never thought I’d have him back.”
Alice smiled. “I understand how important family is. I lost mine when I was young.”
Edith held Alice’s hands. “You’re part of our family now. Please visit us anytime.”
Touched, Alice made an unexpected offer. “Edith, I’ve been looking for a mother figure. Would you consider letting me be a part of your family in return? I’ll help with Chris’s education and anything you need.”
Edith hugged Alice tightly. “Of course, my dear. You’ve given us a second chance.”
Alice smiled, tears in her eyes. “No, Edith. You’ve given me a family. That’s the greatest gift I could ever ask for.”
