“[Kubrick] asked me early on if I’d be willing to gain the weight,” D’Onofrio recalled. “I put on about 30 pounds at first, but he thought I still looked too strong. Eventually, I reached 280 pounds—up from my usual 200.”
Filming the physically demanding boot camp scenes at that weight proved incredibly difficult. Yet D’Onofrio’s performance as the troubled Leonard was so compelling that many viewers found it hard to separate the actor from the character.
“It changed my life,” he said. “People treated me differently. Women didn’t really look at me anymore. And because of the character I played, people often assumed I wasn’t very bright.”
But the role launched a decades-long career, and D’Onofrio remains grateful for the opportunity. “Stanley made my career—there’s no doubt about it. I’ve done over 50 films because of that part.”
Since then, he’s earned acclaim for a wide range of roles, including his long-running turn on Law & Order: Criminal Intent and his portrayal of Wilson Fisk in Marvel’s Daredevil. His film credits include The Break-Up, Dying Young, Jurassic World, and The Unforgivable with Sandra Bullock.
In 2023, D’Onofrio also published a book titled Pigs Can’t Look Up, adding author to his list of achievements.
Personal Life and Family
D’Onofrio’s childhood was shaped by his parents’ divorce, and he later moved to Florida with his mother and stepfather, renowned writer-producer George Meyer.
As a boy, he was introverted and fascinated by magic, learning tricks from Cuban performers who owned a local magic shop.
In the early ’90s, D’Onofrio was in a relationship with actress Greta Scacchi, with whom he shares a daughter, actress Leila George.
He later married Dutch model Carin van der Donk in 1997. The couple had two sons, born in 1999 and 2008, but separated in the early 2000s before reconciling. In June 2023, D’Onofrio filed for divorce, marking the end of their 26-year marriage.

Today, D’Onofrio continues to act and direct, and his career remains as strong and respected as ever.
His transformation for Full Metal Jacket remains one of the most talked-about examples of dedication to a role in modern cinema. Even though decades have passed, the power of that performance still resonates with audiences.
