You Won’t Believe What This Insect in Your Yard Could Mean

The rise of social media has made it easier than ever to share important safety information, sometimes even saving lives. A few years ago, Andrea Pergola experienced this firsthand when her son, Logan, had a dangerous encounter with a caterpillar.

While helping with volunteer work and collecting tree branches, 15-year-old Logan suddenly felt a sharp sting on his arm. Within minutes, a red, grid-like rash appeared, spreading quickly up his arm and chest. Logan began experiencing severe pain, dizziness, and paleness. Andrea tried home remedies, including washing the area and applying garlic, but nothing helped.

It was Logan’s grandfather who identified the culprit: a small, fuzzy caterpillar. Despite its harmless appearance, it turned out to be one of the most poisonous caterpillars in North America. Realizing the danger, Andrea rushed Logan to the emergency room, where he received proper medical care.

Andrea shared her story on Facebook to raise awareness:
“Please research this caterpillar and make sure your kids know about it. Although it’s not native to Florida, it has recently appeared here. If anyone is stung, seek medical attention immediately—over-the-counter treatments like Benadryl may not be enough.”
