Christmas had always been Mark’s chance to kick back while I did everything—planning the menu, decorating the house, cooking for eight, and cleaning up afterward. Year after year, I orchestrated holiday magic while he played the gracious host from the couch, beer in hand.
But this year, he outdid himself.
As I reviewed our holiday grocery list, Mark barely glanced up from his phone. He reached into his wallet, pulled out a single fifty-dollar bill, and dropped it on the counter like he was making a grand gesture.
“Here,” he said with a smirk. “Don’t embarrass me.”
I stared at the bill. “Fifty dollars? For Christmas dinner? That won’t even cover the appetizers.”
Mark chuckled. “My mom always made it work with less. Get creative—or admit you can’t.”
