Reasons You Could Have Numbness or Tingling Sensations in Your Hands

Feeling numbness or tingling in your hands — often described as “pins and needles” — can be alarming. Sometimes, it’s just a fleeting annoyance. Other times, it may be your body’s way of signaling that something deeper is going on. Understanding the possible causes can help you know when it’s harmless — and when it’s time to see a doctor.

1. Sleeping Position

One of the most common reasons for waking up with numb hands is simply how you sleep. Lying in a position that puts pressure on nerves or restricts blood flow can temporarily cause tingling. Usually, shifting your position restores normal sensation quickly.

2. Repetitive Hand Movements

Typing, using tools, or repeating the same motions for long periods can put pressure on the nerves in your hands and wrists. Over time, this may lead to conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, which causes tingling, numbness, or weakness in the hand.

3. Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Your nerves rely on Vitamin B12 for proper function. Low levels can cause tingling in both the hands and feet. This is more common in people with restrictive diets (such as vegans) or in those with absorption issues, including certain digestive conditions.
