When my mother passed away, I truly believed that family ties were unbreakable. I thought that no matter what, we would stand by each other—especially during moments of grief. But after her death, I learned that some bonds aren’t always what they seem.
My mother raised two daughters: me, Charlotte, and my older sister, Barbara. Barbara often seemed to receive more attention—she had a charming personality and always seemed to shine in social settings. With her blonde hair and blue eyes, she resembled our mother closely. I, with my darker features, often felt like the quieter one, but I never questioned our bond. I loved my mother deeply.
When Mom became ill, I devoted myself to her care. I adjusted my life to be there for her—through medical appointments, emotional support, and day-to-day needs. Barbara, meanwhile, was pursuing her career in the arts. She had responsibilities and events that kept her busy, so she wasn’t as present during that time. Though it was difficult, I never resented her. I was focused on making sure Mom was as comfortable as possible.
After our mother’s passing, we met with Alistair, her longtime attorney, to go over her estate. That’s when an unexpected document was revealed: an old adoption decree.
