Fire chief investigating Gene Hackmans death gives major update after establishing tragic detail

Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa Pass Away: Investigation Continues

The passing of legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, has prompted an ongoing investigation, as authorities work to determine the cause of their deaths. The couple was found at their residence in the Santa Fe Summit community in New Mexico on February 26, 2024.

Authorities have ruled out foul play and continue to explore possible explanations. Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, initially suggested carbon monoxide poisoning as a potential cause. However, after thorough testing, the Santa Fe Fire Department confirmed that there were no signs of a carbon monoxide leak in the home.

The couple was discovered in separate rooms, along with one of their three dogs. Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya noted that based on their positioning, Hackman and Arakawa appeared to have passed away around the same time. Additional investigation included analyzing data from Hackman’s pacemaker, which indicated his last recorded activity on February 17, nine days before their discovery.

Authorities also assessed the home’s gas systems. The New Mexico Gas Company found no significant leaks or carbon monoxide issues. A minor gas leak was detected near a stove burner, but officials confirmed it was not at a hazardous level. Other safety concerns were noted around a water heater and fireplaces, but they were not deemed life-threatening.
