“How did you get here?” Thomas asked gently.
“Are you hungry?” Sienna inquired with a tender smile.
“Yes,” the boy nodded.
“What’s your name?” Sienna asked.
“Nikolai,” he replied.
Nikolai explained that he and his mother had come from a troubled place and needed help for his mom. Just then, the police arrived, causing Nikolai to flee in fear before they could apprehend him.
The next day, Sienna and Thomas set out to find Nikolai. They discovered an abandoned Victorian house and, upon further investigation, Sienna heard a woman’s cries for help from inside. She quickly called the police, and soon, a crowd gathered.
Authorities broke into the house and found a distressed woman. In broken English, she introduced herself as Asya and explained that she had come to the U.S. seeking a better life for herself and her son, only to be trapped by a cruel man.
Asya and Nikolai were rescued, and the police assured Sienna and Thomas that they would be taken to safety. The man responsible was being apprehended at his workplace. Although the legality of Asya’s immigration status was uncertain, the authorities promised to ensure they received the help they needed.
The discovery, triggered by a simple photo, had led to a life-changing rescue. “I think this photo deserves a special place on the mantel,” Thomas said, holding up a framed print of the now-famous photo.
“It’s definitely one for the books,” Sienna agreed.
