Despite our busy lives, my husband Alex and I always made an effort to attend family events. However, over time, I noticed a growing distance between us and my family that I hadn’t expected.
Hi, I’m Emily. My husband Alex and I have been together for over ten years. Alex, originally from China, is a warm and charismatic tech professional, while I work as an accountant. Our demanding careers often limit our time with loved ones, but we always made family gatherings a priority, especially during Christmas.
Despite our efforts, I noticed that my family seemed increasingly distant. My cousins, who used to be very close to me, rarely reached out anymore. I initially thought it was due to our busy schedules, but I began to worry when they stopped even sending brief messages. I mentioned this to Alex one evening, feeling anxious and confused. “Do you think they’re still upset about missing Thanksgiving last year?” I asked.
“Maybe, but it doesn’t make sense,” Alex replied. “We’ve missed events before, and your mom always says everyone understands.” Unfortunately, his reassurances did little to ease my worries.
For months, my interactions with my family were minimal and awkward. It felt as though I was being slowly removed from a story where I had always been included. When I spoke to my mom, she dismissed my concerns, saying, “Everyone knows how busy you and Alex are. Those events aren’t that important.”
My unease lingered until an unexpected encounter shed light on the situation. While shopping, I bumped into my Aunt Linda, who was carrying groceries. “Emily! It’s so nice to see you!” she said, her face lighting up.
