My mother-in-law, Evelyn, has never concealed her disdain for me. From the start, she made it clear she disapproved of our marriage, even urging my husband, Caleb, to divorce me. But on her birthday, I decided it was time for her to learn a valuable lesson. What happened next left everyone, including Evelyn, speechless.
Caleb and I have been married for four years. While he has been my rock, Evelyn has consistently created tension between us. She has never supported my career as an artist, frequently expressing that Caleb deserves someone better. At one point, she even introduced him to other women and suggested he should leave me.
I vividly remember our first Christmas together. The warm glow of the fireplace and sparkling holiday lights filled the room as we exchanged gifts. Evelyn, with her silver hair and piercing gaze, handed me a neatly wrapped box.
“This one’s for you, Cecelia,” she said, her tone dripping with false sweetness.
As I unwrapped the gift, I was met with an outrageous, gaudy cat sweater. I forced a smile and thanked her, but she couldn’t resist mocking me. “Oh, it must be a mix-up! It’s too small, but maybe you’d look better in pet fashion!” she laughed.
Humiliated, I swallowed my pride and wore the sweater for the rest of the evening to keep the peace. Later, I learned that she had switched the gift tags—Evelyn had taken my designer scarf and left me with a sweater meant for her cat.
But that wasn’t all. On my wedding day, Evelyn found another way to sabotage things. The venue was perfect, but the food was missing. The caterer had vanished, and after a frantic scramble, we managed to find a replacement at the last minute. Later, Evelyn smugly confessed that she had “lost” the caterer’s contact information. This was no accident, yet the day still turned out beautiful despite her interference.
Her meddling continued, and during a family picnic, she publicly humiliated me. Standing up with a glass of lemonade, she announced, “I can’t wait for Caleb’s next wedding, where he’ll marry someone who truly makes him happy!” The park fell silent, and I felt as if I’d been punched in the stomach. That was the final straw.
As Evelyn’s birthday approached, I decided to give her a gift she would never forget. I hired a top-notch caterer, booked an elegant venue, and planned a grand party. But the highlight would be a video tribute featuring people from her past whom she had wronged.
