Moving to a new town is never easy—especially for a child. The past few weeks had been tough on Jordan. A new home, new school, unfamiliar streets. My once chatty, energetic son had become quiet and withdrawn.
So when we stumbled upon a neighborhood block party—complete with music, games, and a display of police motorcycles—I thought it might lift his spirits. Maybe a little excitement would bring back his smile.
Officer Bellamy was part of the community outreach team. He greeted every family warmly and invited the kids to take turns sitting on one of the motorcycles. When it was Jordan’s turn, the officer knelt beside him, helped him onto the bike, and chatted with him gently.
For the first time in days, I saw Jordan smile.
They spoke quietly. I couldn’t hear everything, but I noticed a subtle change in the officer’s expression—just for a moment. He blinked, straightened up, and gave Jordan a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
“What did you say to him?” I asked later with a light tone, hoping for a funny story. Jordan just looked away and shrugged.
