Our Honeymoon Was Hijacked—But We Got the Last Word
A honeymoon is meant to be an escape—a time for newlyweds to celebrate love, start fresh, and build lasting memories. But ours took a very unexpected turn. The moment Will and I arrived at our villa, it was clear we weren’t alone. And the surprise guests weren’t strangers—they were Will’s parents.
Will hadn’t shared much about his family, and when he did, there was a distant tone in his voice. One evening, before the wedding, he opened up about being asked to leave home at sixteen. His parents had been focused on caring for his younger brother, who had health challenges, and they felt overwhelmed. Will found work, stayed with friends, and supported himself through college. Despite that, he still tried to stay in touch—sending cards, calling during holidays, even visiting. But their response was always distant.
When I suggested inviting them to our wedding, he hesitated. But eventually, he agreed. We sent the invitation, not expecting much. So when I saw them at the reception, I was stunned.
“Will,” I whispered. “Your parents are here.”
His face went pale, but he calmly led us over. The conversation was polite but strained. His parents made a few sharp remarks—questioning our venue, his career, and our choices. Will, always composed, simply said, “Some of us learn to do things on our own.” They left soon after, leaving a vase with the price tag still attached.
Later that night, Will apologized. “I’m sorry about them.” I kissed him and replied, “Let’s forget it. Our honeymoon starts tomorrow.”
