“I used to get overwhelmed when my kids asked for everything they saw at the grocery store. Saying no over and over wasn’t working, so I decided to try something new.
Now, every time we shop, I let them pick one can for the food bank—any can they want. They love it!
They take their time choosing, proudly carry it to the register, and place it in the food bank bin. My daughter even explains to people what the food bank does.
We’ve done this on our last five trips, and not once have they begged for anything else. Plus, they’re learning to help others!
I know this phase won’t last forever, but for now, it’s been a fun and meaningful distraction. As they get older, I might turn it into a game, like finding a can that starts with a certain letter or picking a vegetable.”
