The plane, nearly 40 meters long with 76 windows, offered abundant natural light. Ussery enhanced the living conditions by retaining the original air conditioning system and upgrading the insulation and flooring. She reimagined the plane’s bathrooms and storage areas, creating efficient, space-saving designs.
A Unique Oasis of Comfort
After extensive renovations, Ussery transformed the airplane into a home with three bedrooms, a cozy living room, a functional kitchen, and even a laundry room. She didn’t stop at the essentials; she added luxuries like telephones and a stove. A standout feature was the master bathroom in the guest bedroom, which offered spectacular views.
The room layout was designed to give the sensation of floating on water, adding to the unique ambiance of the home. Ussery and her children enjoyed this one-of-a-kind dwelling from 1995 to 1999, after which she opened it as a public museum. Sadly, during a relocation, the plane slid off its carriage and was damaged beyond repair.
While Jo Ann Ussery’s Boeing 727 no longer exists, its legacy endures, inspiring others with its story of innovation and resilience. Her journey showcases how vision, creativity, and determination can turn the unconventional into a spectacular living space.
